Mona is back for a new season, new graphics and hopefully a new light show (will we be able to get it done in time ?).
First guest is one of France’s finest djs, a force to be reckoned with in all styles of music. He has been plying his trade since the early eighties and his record collection includes the finest pieces of all genres. Never one to be commercial, you’ll always hear tracks that you’ve never heard before in his sets, his monthly parties and radioshows have influenced generations of listeners and dancers from Manchester to Brooklyn via Paris. I don’t really know what more to say right now, except that I’m greatly honoured that he accepted my invitation to play at mona.
Enjoy your holidays wherever you may be !
Cheers
Nick

BEST FRIENDS are back in town this Friday at Nouveau Casino in Paris. I shall be joined by my fellow resident dj and friend DA VINCE, together we will be playing with the very rare (at least over here) DJ MITSU THE BEATS.
Part of the JAZZY SPORT label from Japan, Mitsu is a great producer and is known for his open minded dj sets embracing many styles of music and playing top quality tracks with great style and technical knowhow.
You can hear an amazing dj mix of his on samurai FM right here
Vince and I are looking forward to this night as the Jazzy Sport crew have always been highly respected for their music. We’ll probably be playing early and will be giving Mitsu a long set to play as he spans so many styles of music. Make sure you come early to catch him from the start !
Details (in french) about the night can be found here

It starts at 11pm and only costs 10€ on the door / 8€ in advance

Mona in June is going to be a disco one, with a specialist from London coming to town. Having been brought up on a diet of soul, funk and disco, by his dad, himself a dj, he has worked for Strut, Irma and Nuphonic. His nights in London are now legendary, attracting a mix of nudists, transvestites, girls from next door and respected disco enthusiasts and record collectors. He plays all over the place, always vinyl and majoritarily disco, and some good old house music for good measure too. What more can I say ?
I’ll let you guess the rest … if you do find out then let me know and you’ll get a free ticket to the night (other answers may do too, get me smiling and it should do the job), write to me here : nick.vh@gmail.com
Also many thanks to Greg Oreck, one half of Thugfucker, for flying over from Rome to do the business at last month’s party, which was quite a funny affair, check out the pics here on facebook (by guess who ?). Great music also from the Thank you crew who kicked off the night in true 80s disco funk fashion … merci Salima & Aurélien.

Top parisian duo of djs of What the Funk fame, Soulist and Freeworker have invited me to play at their regular night, Soulist Soundsystem at OPA in Paris. This place, situated near Bastille, is run by quite an original couple. The husband ends up almost naked at the end of the night, sporting nothing but a thong and devil’s horns. A vibe rarely encountered in Parisian clubs and which I totally appreciate especially coming from club owners. Going out at night means total self expression doesn’t it ?
I’ll be playing a mix of things broken, quite a lot of discofunk and some damn good beats !

I started doing nights with Free Your Funk in 2005, when we did a collaboration between the Waxgroove and Guys&Dolls parties we were both promoting. At that time Denis, the man behind the FYF set up, was doing nights in intimate Parisian venues like Boule Noire, Nouveau Casino, La Scène, with a programme of diverse artists such as Greg Wilson, Grand Wizard Theodore, Crazy B and Spinna playing styles of music mainly based around funk and its off shoots : disco, afro, house, hip hop … reviving a few old school hip hop pionneers along the way (and quite a few funny moments too).
Since then he’s gone on to fill out some of the biggest places in Paris (Bataclan, Bellevilloise …) with always the same level of quality in the choice of his artists. This is something I appreciate as many promoters often resort to the more obvious names when they have a big room to fill out frequently leaving the rest aside. With the quality of music in mind I did this hip hop based mix for Denis.
I’m looking forward to our next party together on 31st May when Best Friends meet Free Your Funk at Nouveau Casino / Le Charbon with Gilles Peterson and a whole crew of different djs.

The next date for Best Friends is confirmed with Gilles Peterson topping the bill on Sunday 31st May (the following Monday is a national holiday in France). Gilles will be coming down to Paris to play double helpings of his flavours : Brazilian music in one room and his trademark Worldwide sounds in the other.
The venue chosen, Nouveau Casino, will be given extra large treatment as next door’s Café Charbon will open it’s connecting doors, thus providing two sound systems and two dancefloors for the night.
Café Charbon will host Brazilian sounds exclusively, with specialist dj crews from Favela Chic and hopefully Avé Maria completing the line up alongside Mr Peterson.
Best Friends dj team Nickv and Davince will be playing in Nouveau Casino with Gilles Peterson and his protégé The bpm for a colourful night of worldwide flavours for the feet and for the soul.
Extra spice is added as Best Friends will be teaming up with top Parisian promoters Free Your Funk to guarantee an extra large night packed with funky people and friendly faces.

May’s edition is coming soon. We’ve got djs from Berlin and New York coming over to guest with me. Again a lot of disco and maybe some hipster rock to warm up the room. After that I’ll be playing with a friend from New York now based in Rome, an inspired producer and excellent dj. We’ve got loads of new stuff : records bought, tracks from the studio and there may even be a small live show … see more about that soon. A special warm up treat is expected so come early !

Also many thanks to Pete Herbert and his musical talents at last month’s Mona. Tracks of the night were : 2000 and one ‘spanish fly’, Charles Earland ‘Coming to you live’, Light of the world ‘Time’, Par-t one ‘I’m so crazy’ … and a few more, I’ll get the mix up on here soon.
