Parties I C’est la rentrée !

moreaboutmusic

After breezing through a relaxed summer it’s time to get back into gear and let you know about my next gigs coming up. Firstly though I have to say that I have decided to translate my articles into French from now on too (I do live in France don’t I ?).

This weekend is packed with action as I’m going back to the UK for the bank holiday weekend.

Friday and Saturday mark two stops in Brighton where I have been kindly invited by Pablo Contraband one of the main disco specialists in town. First up I’ll be playing with him on Friday 27th August at Globe which is a small pub basement affair, a perfect soul disco night in perspective. Then on the Saturday afternoon we have the pleasure to be joined by the one and only Red Greg who has rapidly become one of the favourite guests to have graced the decks at mona. People loved him there last month (check out his set below), and I’m sure they will this time around in Brighton too.

Deviant Terrace

Next day, Sunday 29th August I’ll be on my way to London for Notting Hill Carnival which is the second biggest event of the sort in the world after Rio. I’ll be playing at the now regular carnival jam organised by the More about Music crew on the two levels of the Fat Badger pub which is bang in the middle of carnival route. I am very happy to be involved once again in this party – this is the third year I am part of their line up and I must take the opportunity to thank Mark Potts for making it happen each time. He’s been doing this for 5 years with some of the best artists of the modern electronic soul music scene in the UK. This year will feature 26 djs including Phil Asher, Red Rack’em, Souled, my good friend Nick Rees, Jerry Dammers (from The Specials), Ladybugz (who rocked the Worldwide festival in Sète this summer), Aaron Ross … all spread over two days so no doubt I’ll be there the next evening to enjoy an extra dosage of music and vibes!

The following weekend the scenery changes as I head for Hyères in the South of France for the first edition of Festival Dance on the Beach. Three days of music, video projections and dance lessons including a special vogueing class. I shall be opening the festival on Friday 2nd September, playing on the beach just as the sun goes down … which is something I’ve always dreamed of so many thanks to The Ed for making that happen!

On Friday 10th of September I’ll be back in Paris playing for the Open House crew. They’re having me twice this month. First gig is in a new place I’ve never been to called 1979 – I might get inspired to play even more disco in a place named like that. Alongside me there’s Marco Dos Santos, a great dj who knows loads about Brazilian music and even more about how to move a crowd, open house resident Paco and electronic music dj Alex Murak.

open house 11 sept 2010

After this you have the return of mona on Saturday 18th September with once again a very secret guest from the UK. More about that one soon on this space. That same afternoon the Plaqué Or team will be celebrating their 8th birthday at La Plage du Glazart and shall be taking my music down to play alongside dj supreme Maurice Fulton. The end of the month there’s the second open house party (Friday 24th Sept) in a big big place. More about that one soon too.

—————————————————————————————————————————

dance on the beach

Red Greg & Nickv disco jam :

Here’s a dj that we have been wanting to have over at mona for quite a while. I first heard about him a few years back through my good friend Soulsam who runs Spacefunk webradio, his dj mixes were being passed around over the internet like hot cakes ! The were so well  mixed especially considering the type of music he plays : early eighties disco funk boogie – all djs know how difficult it is to mix this music with it’s ever changing rhythms, and the quality of his selection was impeccable, so many unheard of tracks that we have been wanting to pick up ever since. I definitely had to know more about this guy! When our next discofunk themed mona night came around it was only too logical to fly Red Greg over from London as our special guest and of course have Soulsam to open the night! To add some extra spice to things I asked Beki D to come down and perform covers of three disco classics which she executed brilliantly and really got the crowd into the right mood for the party. So all this good music, drag performers and a crazy open minded dressed up disco head crowd made up for a mad final mona night … final for the season only, as we’re back in September of course ! Please enjoy the mixes above.

This was one of my favourite gigs of late.

Firstly it was Didier Lestrade’s photo exhibition aftershow. I’ve known Didier for a few years now, we became close after running Otra Otra, possibly my favourite DJ residency in Paris, for nearly two years at La Boule Noire 2004-2006. Back in the 90s I’d only heard of him, through his militant work for ACT UP, which he founded in France in the days when the AIDS epidemic was causing a lot of damage (though it’s not over yet), and also through his pieces of musical journalism for French daily paper, Liberation, when house music was barely represented in mainstream record stores. A very respected man indeed who talks a lot of sense and knows when to stand up and be counted. He doesn’t live in paris anymore, he works from his house in Southern Normandy, I don’t see him very much so it was great just to see him again and be part of the show as they say. Didier isn’t a photographer, but even so the pictures he took are damn good, they are of faces he met, some famous some not, when he founded “Magazine” the first gay fanzine (in France at least I think) in the early 80s. I really love this guy, he’s so obsessed with detail, he used to clean the toilets in the Boule Noire, put joss sticks backstage and then spread talcum powder on the wooden floor (I reckon he nicked that idea from the Northern Soul nights in the UK the 70s) just before the club opened just so as it would look nice for the first few people coming through the doors. His pieces of journalism are fantastic. When I moved to France from England, I always missed that extra bit of excitement and humour that is so well conveyed in articles by British writers about sport or a particular music scene for example. I think Didier was the only French writing journalist ever to capture that and then make it his own, taking it onto another level with his focus on detail and all round loved up slant on things. Today he’s involved in a host of things, you can check out his blog to find out more, or connect to ‘minorités‘ a very conscious blog of which he is part, that defends minority groups throughout the world. The photo exhibition is still going on at the moment here at gallerie 12mail in Paris and music lovers should definitely get their hands on a copy of “Chroniques du dancefloor” which covers selected record reviews Didier did in Liberation between 1988 and 1999. It appropriately costs the price of a 12 inch vinyl record!

Secondly I had the chance to meet Daniel Wang again. Daniel is a very buoyant person with infectious energy that can bounce back at you. Also he’s a bit of a tekkie guy, and he’s not afraid to hide it, which is rare in these creative circles, where interest for anything technical can be unfortunately perceived as a bore. So we really got on well especially as we talked about acoustics which is my second part time, day time job, yes I am a tekkie too! Danny doesn’t drink nor do anything else, he’s just got this electrical energy about him that’s very catchy, we must have covered 5 different topics in the space of ten minutes between the moment the music stopped and when he jumped into a cab. He’s written this great article about discotheque acoustics that every club owner, dj and producer should read. Very inspiring ! So I have decided to write my own article on acoustics too that should appear on here very shortly.

Getting back to the music anyway. I was a bit weary about playing last in line at 430 am on a thursday night. Even at Le Rex they don’t fill up Thursdays like they used to maybe 10 years back when it was definitely the night to go out on in Paris (only Le Pulp has succeeded since and they have been closed down for over 2 years). So I was wondering if I was actually going to play at all.

Patrick Vidal started off first laying down the kind of atmosphere that you want to get started in a club. Patrick is one hell of a dj, I know him well now and I think he’s the dj I’ve played with most, ever. I’ll find some time to write a few words about him in a later post as he deserves it in my opinion definitely. Then came Morgan Geist, of Metro Area fame, playing the sort of edgy disco and early house sounds that have inspired him and Darshan Jesrani to make such class music. Daniel Wang was on at 3am. That’s make or break time, especially on a thursday night, but he put so much energy and enthusiasm into his djing that he turned the Rex into second party, as if people had come back through the doors all over again. It completely distilled my fears of an empty room and it was so easy for me to ride the wave and play right after him, taking the night to an end with Daniel Wang himself and a young african kid vogueing elegantly to the music in front of me.

Redbull music academy recorded the whole night so check the links at the end of this article to listen to Patrick Vidal, Daniel Wang and myself. Morgan Geist’s set is not available but he has a show on Redbull academy you can check out.

mona heaven flyer with Dj Rork Elias Ladybird and Nickv

This was a quite a hard night to succeed in terms of crowd attraction. It was on the saturday following thursday’s national holiday in France, and when that happens Parisians traditionnally take a day off to ‘bridge’ with the weekend and leave town to catch some rays near the sea or out in the provinces. Plus it was the Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon and a lot of our crowd had gone to see Danny Krivit, Joe Claussel and François K play their Body and Soul set there on Saturday. Our attendance was definitely much lower than usual.

But what I’ve often noticed, at Mona at least, is that when the crowd is smaller the atmosphere is actually better. I think people can actually see each other more so all that eye contact and extra dancing room definitely creates a better vibe than when you’re standing against a wall nodding your head to the music because you can’t move.

We had the Elevation team over to guest with me : DJ Elias, DJ Rork and Ladybird on vocals. Elevation is a sunday afternoon tea dance for deep house lovers and dancers. They’ve just started but have already done a few great parties and are very open minded about their crowd and music policy so it was definitely appropriate for us to invite to them play at mona. Ladybird’s live performance was the highlight. I’ve often played Soldiers of Twilight – which is her and Rork – in my sets so it was quite a special moment to have them perform their songs live at mona.

Enjoy out the videos below and the mixes above. Above also is the flyer designed by Carlos Torres who is part of mona. I love the way the fingers touch in the ‘O’.
Next mona on 19th June ‘mona loves marseille’ at La Java.

Mixes I Nickv all night long at mona

Keeping up with the blogging has been quite hard of late. The past two months have been full of interesting and amazingly fun gigs that have taken a lot time to prepare, on top of that I have had a lot of work on the two latest mOna nights, plus my daytime (all be it partime) acoustics consultancy job. So I just haven’t had time to sit down and write a few lines on this space.

Firstly though, I thought I’d put up this all night long mix up. It was recorded at the last mOna night on 17th April. Despite being serious about our music, we have always been more into the fun side of things at mona (as opposed to the more serious dj orientated parties), so this time instead of inviting a guest dj we decided to invest heavily on the deco side of things around the chosen theme of Masters and Servants, and I played music all night.

It was quite a stressful affair at the start as we were obviously late on most aspects (deco preparation, lighting, opening time …) and as usual people really started to show up at 2am, which left us worrying again for a couple of hours (this may even be heard on the mix itself).

Anyway as the night went on and energies were released things began to flow. This mix becomes quite varied, especially towards the end (sorry for the distortion and approximate mixing over the last hour, what was I drinking at the end?!) and includes tracks by : Grace Jones, Lil Louis, Taana Gardner, Aril Brikha, The Digital Underground, Tamiko Jones, Carl Craig, Oliver Cheatham, Seiji, Faze Action, Melba Moore, The Cure, Aksidan, James Pants, DOP, The Daou, Malcolm Mc Claren, Crazy P, The Roots, Deelite, Hot Chip, MCDE, Omar S, Lektroluv, Kink and Neville Watson, Cookie Watkins, The B52s, Coral Way Chiefs, YBU, Nathaniel X, The Motivators, Donna Summer, Kenny Dope, MFSB, James Johnston, New Order, Llorca, Omar, Madonna, Andre Lodeman, Tony Lionni, Pepe Bradock …
I hope you’ll enjoy it.

I must thank once more everyone who worked on mona this time around a lot of good work and creative energy was put in : Carlos, Fred, Moh, Arnaud, Adeline, Mat and David. Also big thanks to Titi and Khiet for their performances and all the heads who came down and dressed up!

Next mona : Saturday 15th May

Parties I mona jacking the groove

We’ve got a special Chicago connection coming to town this month for mona. All house heads know that Chicago is the official birth place of house music, even if I believe it was also spawned simultaneously in New York and Detroit. But I think Chicago was probably the first place to actually make a whole scene based around House and of course the Warehouse club, where Frankie Knuckles made his name, gave the genre the shortened name it has today.

Proposition chicago1

I was a teenager living in Manchester at the time the first House music records were being released on independent labels out of Chicago such as Trax, DJ international and Jack Trax. When house music began to filter out of Chicago one of the first places to embrace it was Manchester. photo-1Around 1986 I noticed a new scene quickly developing around this strangely binary yet extremely soulful and emotional from of music, with DJs, dance crews, radio shows and specialist club nights being held in places like the Playpen, the Gallery and then the Hacienda – which later became very famous for it’s role as the hub of the madchester scene right at the end of the 80s. I was too young to attend clubs at the time so the closest I got to experience the house feeling was Stu Allen’s radio show on Sunday nights on Piccadilly radio 261. I still have tapes from those shows at home. This was the first time I ever heard house – aside from top ten chart hits Steve Silk Hurley ‘Jack your body’ and Farley Jack Master Funk’s cover of Issac Haye’s ‘love can’t turn around’.photo 2-2 Stu’s shows were actually 3 hours long and split into three equal parts : Souled Out (the latest 80s soul), Buss Diss (Hip Hop which was also an emerging scene, but slightly more developed) and then the house hour – House music always had an evident connection to Soul right from the start, regardless of what old school purists thought at the time – which featured the excellent ‘it’s time for house’ intro.

In the beginning I never used to listen to the house hour as it was late at night and my parents would always make sure I was fresh for school on Monday mornings. But decided to listen through one night and what I heard blew me away, a combination of futuristic deep synth sounds combined with fierce dance beats, a sensation of travelling through a whole new musical space. That was house, photo 3something so different from the other forms of dance music I’d heard at the time, something made with machines yet so rich in emotion. I can’t say I liked every single track I heard but it was definitely a completely new dimension and I’ve never looked back since. Needless to say I’m very much looking forward to this Chicago special at mona that will feature one of the original artists and djs from back in the day!

Just to take you back, here’s a bit of one of Stu Allen’s shows. This link is from a great site called Manchester Radio Music. It features one of Stu’s later shows judging from the music I guess it was done in 1989 or 1990 by which time Stu had moved on from Piccadilly to Key 103. I will  record one of my own personal tapes of Stu’s early house shows to put up here one day! Make sure you read more about Stu Allan in Greg Wilson’s excellent electro funk roots web site here

And below is amazing footage shot in Moss Side Manchester around 1986 showing the moves of Foot Patrol the best dance crew in town at the time. Check out the moves, styles, spats and whistles! I really hope the vibe in clubs today will move back to be centered around dancing like it was back in those days.

mix | One hour for ‘le son de la maison’ on radio grenouille

MUSIC HERE (you have to scroll down to the post on 26th december 2009 and you’ll see the player there)

This mix was done for Yvan Le Bleu who kindly invited me to feature on his monthly radio show on radio Grenouille broadcasted in Marseilles. I’m stupidly slow at getting mixes out to people who request them, as, aside from being very busy, I always make a point out of making exclusive work for them and not copying something that has already been done.  The idea around Yvan’s show was to do two half hour parts, the first of which was to be focused on older influences and the second more based around more contemporary sounds.

ROYAYERS

I was listening to a lot of amazing jazz funk fusion records at the time and decided to do a short compilation of that stuff to start off with and then go into some 4/4 based disco and house bits. Yvan’s shows can be heard on his blog, please take time to check them out you’ll find some excellent music on there. Enjoy the music!

MONATOTEM

Here is the whole mix recorded during Mona’s 2nd anniversary. Over 600 people came down to La Java to dance to the sounds of 21 djs and over 6hours of HOTDANCERmusic! It was great to be able to invite so many friends to play with me. Most had already played at Mona or are regulars at the party and will be playing again in the near future. The night started with a special set from the mona crew with a wicked selection of songs ranging from soul to tsigane kitcherie. LAFLEURWe had first timers at mona like Fred djaaleb who manages Jeff Mills but also has a very deep knowledge of techno and house, Miss Chrysalide who definitely rocked the crowd – check her out on the video below and dj Sundae who aswell as being a top notch dj has also been involved in mona’s graphic design. PATRICKADELINEADAMIt was a pleasure to hear the sounds of Soul Sam from radio Space funk (we have been connected for over 20 years now), taste maestro Adam Green and also good friends Soulist and Freeworker representing What the Funk. Ex record dealers Soulmate and djAlmost, NICKVcame down showing their utmost good taste for music in all kinds. Then we had classy disco queens Patrick Vidal, Aïcha and Emmanuel Caurel followed by techno and house garage heads LadyB, Slip Matt, Jasonw Fantomette and La Fleur. The exact line up is below! I took over around 330 to take the night through till 6am. DANCERS3I thoroughly enjoyed this one playing the sounds of Motor City Drum Ensemble, Pepe Bradock, ReelSoul, DJ Pierre, Roska, Radio slave, Roxy Music, Barbara Tucker, ARNOARMELLEMathew Jonson, Aril Brikha, Karizma and much more. Parties I big fun to be had over the next two months!

Wow mona really rocked it last week, but for the past few months it has taken up quite a lot of space on this blog, as the team and I have devoted a lot of  time and energy to improve things, so I’ll come back to that in a later post.  There have been quite a few other great nights of late too : Best Friends with Domu (expect the last two hours of the night up here soon), What the Funk with Mr Thing, Regine’s for the Proverbe crew.
So what’s coming next ?

djoon_krivit_web_fb

I’m lucky to be involved in some amazing gigs over the next three months : playing with Danny Krivit at Djoon (26.02), Elevation with Rork, Ladybird and dj Elias (07.03), mona goes Chicago (20.03), with Derrick May for the Technorama crew at Rex (26.03), back at Elevation this time at Djoon with Elias and Emmanuel Caurel (28.03), a disco deluxe with Dimitri from Paris (09.04), a Mona special (17.04), a trip to play in Marseilles at Le Passe Temps and Le Polikarpov (23.04), Rex with Danny Wang, Patrick Vidal and Morgan Geist (29.04).

derrick maySo it’s quite an exciting start to this year and I’ll be sharing a few nights with some amazing djs and artists. Of course I’ll keep you posted with the flyers and more information about these nights, but definitely big fun to be had over the next two months!

A special mention goes out to the guys at Elevation who have started up a Sunday late afternoon early evening dance party at Le Back Up club, a great space, with a massive dancefloor and good sound system. ELEVATIONThe club isn’t in the usual eastern Paris circuit but they still managed to attract a good amount of people to their previous events with a relaxed (but definitely up for a party) Sunday night atmosphere and quality deep house played by residents Rork and Elias with Ladybird on live PA. I send out my fullest support as we all know how hard it is to set up a new project in Paris at the moment. You can find out more about Elevation on their Facebook group

Mona’s second anniversary saturday 20.02

To tell the truth I wasn’t really sure about making a big deal about mona being two years old. It didn’t really seem to be a very big figure, but a friend pointed out to me the other day, that the longevity of a night should be measured on a human scale in the same way as we work out a cat’s age. It is indeed hard to keep a party thriving and exciting, you need to keep things fresh regularly by renewing yourself and your music and by making sure your people are always having a good time. So I decided to go along with the fuss in the end … mona is 18 then, about time she became an adult.
M2
Like last year we’re inviting a many past djs as we can to come down and play. Last year we had 12, this year it should be more than 20, 25 in fact – this includes the actual members of the mona crew (fred, moh and carlos) who will like the rest be playing between two and three tracks each between 1130 pm and 330 am. Considering the large spectrum of djs present we should cover the best of the last 30 years of dance music from original soul to future minimal techno. In three hours with over 20 djs it should be a more than interesting soundtrack to the night. I’ll take over the second part from 330 am onwards, I still haven’t quite worked out how I’m going to approach the night, but I’ll definitely include the tracks that have gone down the best with the crowd at mona over the past 12 months.

Here’s a lovely article written by my friend Aïcha about mona. Aïcha is one of France’s leading disco djs and runs the excellent disco queer night. Very well schooled in the genre and excellent mix master we simply could not resist inviting her down to play for us. You should be hearing more of her out and about Paris this year and deservedly so! And if you come to mona this saturday then you may well catch her again!

Mix | mona jan 2010 Nickv & Cosmo Vitelli … mona supports Haïti

mona nickv & cosmo vitelli all night long

LIGHTS
Running a club night after a while sometimes raises questions that can go beyond the simple fact (but far from easy feat) of congregating your crowd and playing the music of your life every month. We have been doing mona for two years now, it’s mainly been quite successful from a commercial point of view, we don’t earn heaps of money but we never lose anything, are able to afford great djs, make regular improvements to our set up and invest for future nights. I started to feel we could  maybe set aside part of our earnings and donate it to a charity.

When the tremor in Haïti happened we were actually in the process of thinking about how to support such causes, and with the sheer scale of destruction and despair, it occured very naturally for us to donate the whole amount of the night’s earnings to La Fondation France – Solidarité Haïti. The quake occured on the Wednesday, mona was on the Saturday, the decision was wrapped up pretty quickly.

When you make a strong statement, you get quite a lot of attention. La Java, always empty at 1am for mona, filled up pretty early. I’m sure people were expecting a full house, was it conscious support for Haïti or was it because, as a consequence, people had been talking about the party for two days ? Maybe a bit of both. I felt a strong sense of solidarity throughout the night and most regulars, used to being on the guest list, were more than happy to pay (even if we’re still wondering what happened to the others that never made it and whom we never heard about afterwards – I wonder if they will put in any future requests). Other people attending didn’t really agree with our stance. Why support now ? Why not before ? Why Haïti ? Why such a widespread cause when you appeal to such a closeted crowd ? Isn’t it a deguised way of promoting your night ?
CARLOSFANTO
We had regularly thought about doing this with part or all of our earnings, without really knowing how to (and I still don’t feel we do so today). Why ? There’s always been a special mood at mona between people. Quite a lot goes on during a night, energies are liberated and exchanged, this is what makes people hang out for so long in such a confined and crowded space. You give out a lot and people take that home with them. So making a donation is an extension of that. It’s also a way of spreading a certain form of consciousness that you might not associate immediately with such a hedonistic activity, but isn’t in opposition with it, on the contrary. You can influence people in a positive direction by spreading out a positive message. Music is filled with such messages, listen to the lyrics of certain disco songs, naïve sometimes but uplifting nonetheless.  A club night can be the same, if the experience is positive then you go home feeling good.

If you have the capacity to reach out and make an impact on a group of people like we have at mona, then you should use it positively. We spread messages about music or a particular, sometimes marginally perceived, way of being. We encourage social mixity and open mindedness, we push boundaries and share experiences with others regardless of who they are, what they do for work or who they sleep with. So showing support and care for those in need is exactly the same type of message that we are trying to convey every month, except on a more universal scale. This universality may bother certain people as mona can appear to be a very confidential affair, but we don’t exclude people from our nights, anyone is free to join in.

Making such decisions can always be a bit delicate as you never receive total support, whatever you do, there will always be someone to question or even challenge you. If you believe in your actions and believe they are right then you should plan them and carry out that plan. It is good to question but never good to remain in doubt.

I hope you enjoy the mix of the night above, I’m sorry I didn’t time to edit it (I might do a bit later on) so that’s nearly six hours of music mixed live for your ears. Thanks to Cosmo Vitelli, who came down and showed why he is one of the best French djs around. This short video was shot at 525 in the morning with Jean Carne singing out loud and clear, a very sweet moment.

This date was supposed to be the big one. They (the big party promoters) always say that the weekend before the xmas holidays is the best for having a night as everyone is out to party before packing up and going home to open their presents. But this year it wasn’t to be, at least on the attendance side of things, as Paris was covered in snow and experiencing it’s first bout of sub zero temperatures on the night of the final mOna party of the year. It’s not Helsinki here, people aren’t used to it, so our expected attendance was down by a third I guess.

They missed out on yet another great night though as mOna has been getting better every month. We had four guests playing : Carlos (who isn’t really a guest being actually part of the mOna team), JasonW aka fist fusion (king of the def mix edits), Greg Blackjack (my mate since 1982!! so you can guess how much music we’ve been through together since then) and Fantomette (who will soon be in charge of programming Paris’s newest and most exciting club since Le Pulp closed a few years back).

Each played an hour and you can listen to all the sets above. I finished the last 2 and a half hours off at the end. It was a definite house party this time – except for Carlos who played a mix of kitsch world soul fusion at the start, in front of about two and half people, (why don’t people turn up earlier in clubs in Paris ?). It’s a great feeling to hear good house music in a club, when the vibe clicks I don’t think there’s anything better for a dancefloor. Feels like being suspended in time, beats flowing, bass rumbling, dark room, deep atmosphere … I really miss that vibe now, we don’t get it as much as before in clubs today sadly. Track of the night goes to André Lodeman ‘where are you now’ a superb piece of modern house music that encompasses many different atmospheres and an almost dissonant jazz touch too.

The icing on the cake came thanks to Arnaud our very own light jockey, who built our new light show, and managed to persuade the club to allow us to use a smoke machine (it’s non smoking in Paris and there are alarms in clubs now). Lights look so much better when you have a smoke screen for them to beam through !

You know it’s been a good night when most people are still aound when the music stops. Check out our friend Mat Cav’s pictures from the night on facebook here and here too, some of them were taken at the end of the night with the bouncers inhaling the helium in the balloons and then squealing at people to leave. Here are other great photos taken by Mathias Casado Castro for Têtu.

Hope you enjoy the music and any feedback is always appreciated!

mona disco special

This was indeed a great night. I think we broke our attendance record (outside of our birthday nights), something like nearly 600 people, that’s still far from the bigger more fashionista nights in Paris, but I love our crowd. Definitely into the music, very loyal and great loving people. It really makes me very happy to see them every month.

photo 3-1Here is the mix to the last two hours of the night. I keep repeating myself but it’s always the best time to be at mona. Always loads of fun. If you were there you could have caught Aïcha miming the lyrics to each song. Anyway this is a sort of jam between Patrick Vidal, Aïcha and myself, you will hear stuff from : Sylvester, Patrick Adams, Eddie Drennon, Tata Vega, George Michael, Jocelyn Brown, MFSB, Sweet Cream, Hot Streak, Laidback, Punkin’ Machine, The Strikers, Deodato, Sharon Brown  …photo 4

Also many thanks to our friends Tim, Gauthier and Gilles who kindly chose mona to do the release party for the first edition of the very excellent Revue Monstre.

Please let me know if you enjoyed the listen, we are thinking of doing more disco funk nights, so any feedback is great.

Party I mOna in December 2009

Mona has been improving greatly of late, and we’ve had two amazing nights back to back. Firstly in October with Mr White (you can hear that night here) and then in November with Patrick Vidal and Aïcha from Discoqueer, a superb disco night we did with our friends from Revue Monstre, the mix to that night will be up here very shortly (loads of stuff to listen to from Patrick Adams, Sylvester, MFSB, Strikers, Persia, Deodato, Tata Vega, Sweet Cream …). I have to say I’m very pleased about it, Moh, Carlos and Fred who also run the night with me, have been working their socks off so it’s nice to see positive results and people enjoying the mona vibe, getting down to some of the most amazing pieces of dance music, until very very late!

mona-logo-19decembre09-1

This Saturday it’ll be the final party of the year. It being close to xmas we decided to make it more of a family vibe and have invited 4 djs who really know all about mona as they are regulars at the night. We’ll have a different dj on every hour from 1130 through to 330 am, when I’ll be coming on. Music will range from kitsch Gipsy ballads at the start through to minimal techno via the best ‘fist‘ edits of Frankie Knuckles’ Def mix remixes and deep house inspired from the excellent Panorama bar club in Berlin. To make things particularly festive, we’ll be adding on a few extras to spice things up : balloons, smoke machine, maira the fortune teller, the paris branch of the sisters of perpertual indulgence and a limited series of mona badges.

As usual blog readers will get guest list places by writing to me here : nickv@nickv.fr

LA JAVA PARISAll the promotions team (and this includes myself) had worked exceedingly hard for this month’s party, so as to improve on september, which we felt hadn’t been as good as our previous nights. Promotion can get rather tedious and repetitive at times, we try to make sure we don’t do too much but sometimes we can get a bit carried away so I hope we weren’t too intrusive for people.

My guest for this month was american singer and dj, Mr White, who performed the vocals for the underground acid house music hit ‘the sun can’t compare’ by Larry Heard on his own imprint, Alleviated Records. I don’t think we tried as hard as usual to keep his identity secret – maybe a bit worried about pulling a good crowd in – so quite a few people knew who was to be expected, especially as we had sent out emails promoting the night featuring the youtube link to his song (if that’s not letting the cat out of the bag then I don’t know what is).

mr white

So a conjunction of both factors made up for a pretty big crowd, and quite a few music heads too – which is always a good sign. I really didn’t know what to expect djing wise from Chad (mr white) – sometimes artists can be very mediocre on the decks, but I was quick to brush aside any doubts, when he started playing (and singing) his first two records. A great mix of house music ensued sometimes deep and vocal, sometimes pumping and jacking and impeccably mixed, as with most american djs. He also performed his songs, singing on top of the instrumental versions. This contributed to building an extremely warm atmosphere in the club. You can’t beat live performance and crowd interaction for that. The best part was right at the end when he sung ’sun can’t compare’ and carried on accapella when la java turned the music off (why can’t they wait until the track ends ? so impolite).

I hope you enjoy the mixes posted above. Make sure you skip through at least to listen to Mr white’s singing!

Party I dates for october and november

A few people have asked me how they can stay in touch for my dates in Paris. This blog is supposed to be the answer to that question. Unfortunately my blogging technique is rather limited and I can’t work out a good way to post all my dates up here automatically, so for now I’m going to do a monthly recap post that should feature my main dates. This is one of such (for a day to day update, the easiest way to stay in touch is via facebook – contact Nick Vu-Hoang).

Anyway back to nights in Paris, of course guest list requests for any of the following nights are welcome : nick.vh@gmail.com.

Nickv @ regine ProverbeNext date coming up is on SATURDAY 31st OCTOBER at REGINE’S with the guys from PROVERBE. Yes that’s halloween isn’t it ? Well in France Halloween definitely isn’t part of things, and for some very commercial and, in my opinion, completely unwelcome reason a lot of street corner businesses have picked up on it in the past ten years, using it boost sales of whatever trade they were into. Anyway the guys at Proverbe are not having any of this, check out their halloween style, tribute to the tabloids flyer also featuring keith cowboy, scorpio and flash if I’m not mistaken. PROVERBE is a monthly webradio podcast (that can sometimes last 10 hours!) run by LutS, Lee Bayer and Etienne des Roseaux covering all faces of dance music. The night promises to be quite a festive moment (expect a lot of disco and quality house music) as it’s a saturday, Regine’s is a wicked little joint and, to crown it all, entrance is FREE! (to avoid Paris’s notorious west end ‘get out of the way cheapo’ door policy get in touch for safe guest list action).

best friends novembre 2009 nouveau casino avec domuAnother good date is BEST FRIENDS on FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER at NOUVEAU CASINO. Best Friends is one of my two Parisian residencies, mona being the other. Dedicated to leftfield soul music best Friends has had some great guests this year including Mad Mats, Gilles Peterson and Mitsu the beats. This the final party of the year and DAVINCE (my fellow resident dj) and I shall be sharing the decks with producer and dj supreme DOMU who is famous for his excellent tracks that cover all styles from broken beat to disco to hip hop and drum & bass. He’s also a very skillful and crowd pleasing dj and is part of the infamous posse of djs that includes Bugz in the attic and who reigned over that night called COOP … nuff said! A great domu mix can be found here:

Last but definitely not least we have MONA on SATURDAY 21st NOVEMBER. We are very bad with keeping things up to date at mona, I don’t really have any recent links for you to find out anything more, plus I’m not supposed to say anything about who’s playing so I guess you’ll all have to wait. I might put something up here a bit later on, as it promises to be a very very good night. I’m not trying to sell it or anything as it’s already quite a reputed night (mona spreads by word and mouth, which is the best way to learn about things in my opinion), just make sure you come down this time. The last party was with MR WHITE from Memphis who performs with Larry Heard on Alleviated records. It was the first time we actually had a singer do a live performance and he rocked. The mixes to the whole night will appear here within a couple of weeks. In the meantime you can get a taste of the atmosphere by looking at the pictures of david volants and mat cavStay in touch with mona here.

And also :

Friday 30th october : 4 hours of jazz funk at Baxo
Tuesday 17th november : 3h hours of good music with Franck Roger at Andy Wahloo

nickv & erik rug jam till close down

I’ve just discovered that it’s incredibly hard to blog post on a regular basis. A french person would probably say ‘you haven’t invented hot water by saying that’, and yes it does sound obvious doesn’t it ? However I am supposed to reveal who played at mona before the following party for promotional reasons. But it’s just not that easy to find time to edit the mix, find pictures, find something to say, when you have a day time job, two dj residencies, mix requests, loads of new tracks to listen to … anyway enough ranting now!

The five mixes above are the complete recordings of september’s mona party. That month I had the greatest of pleasures to play once more with Erik Rug, one of my all time favourite Parisian djs. Erik has an amazing collection of records and he has been djing since 1981, so he just about covers anything you can find in dance music. On top of that he has irreproachable taste in music, so you’ll never be disappointed when listening to him play.

erik rug @ mona

It was however quite a strange night, it sometimes felt like people had just come back from holidays and had forgotten how to dance (maybe I was myself a little tired after just getting off a 13h plane trip back from my own holidays in Vietnam). Erik still did the job with style and you can check out the mixes recorded on the night on this post.

You might notice on the pictures that the light show has changed at mona. We replaced the fixed neonesque fluorescent lights with LED light sabres that can actually flash and change colour upon demand. Everyone was really happy with the new set up (thanks Arnaud).
Erik Rug has a new music project out called Le Damn Dog check it out here.

Favourite tracks on the night were :

Grace Jones ‘La vie en rose’
2000 and One ‘Spanish fly’
Sweet Cream ‘I don’t know what I’d do if  you ever left me’
Skyy ‘First time around’ (played twice)
Raphael Cameron ‘Boogie’s gonna get ya’
Nightlife Unlimited ‘Peaches and Prunes’
Armando ‘Don’t take it (johnny fiasco mix)’
Expansions ‘Move your body’
Erykah Badu ‘Honey (souled remix)’ … an amazing mix that you can listen to and download below

Party I mona sat 19th Sept … a new style

So a new season begins for mona, the third one now. La Java remains our venue of choice but we’ve made  few changes this year. Firstly, a new light show has been built. The old one kept breaking down and we wanted something more dynamic this year so we decided to invest a little. I really believe a good light show is essential, it’s as important as your sound system. Great lights and the possibility to black them out make a massive difference in a night. Most people don’t realise this, including many promoters and venue owners, which is a shame. When I used to play at Boule Noire for otra Otra we built an amazing light show there, my friend Robert designed it and it was run by Daniel, who also became a friend in the process. We used to get our routines synchronised using sign language to cue ourselves up, believe me we made people go crazy in there. So I’m really looking forward to unveiling and enjoying the effects of our new system on the crowd tomorrow night !

monalogo0909

We’ve also changed our art direction a little and made the logo a little more organic and do it yourself. It sort of looks like a home made stamp, that’s how we wanted things to be as we felt our previous graphics didn’t suit the venue and our crowd as much. The rough stamp is more fitting to the edgy faces that show up at mona every month. Many thanks to sundae for his artwork.

My guest tomorrow is a French DJ I’ve always loved since I started going out in Paris. He’s been around a long long time – I used to tape record his radio shows in the early nineties – but he still remains of the most upfront people around, always interested in what’s going on around him, but always keeping close to the music that he’s been playing from day one. Arguably he runs the best boogie and disco nights in Paris and has been doing so for over 10 years. He was one of the first heads to pioneer house music back in the 80s. I think his collection must be one of the world’s best, whenever I go out to listen to him there are always tracks he pulls out that I’ve never ever heard. Never one to compromise he’s always been one of the freshest DJs around. Make sure you check him out tomorrow night or get down to his residency when you find out who it is !

clem

So who came to play in July ? My biggest thanks go out to Clement aswefall who you can see in the picture above. Clement used to run the infamous dagroove (later daphonics) record shop in Paris and is also half of aswefall, French electronic folk group. He’s a big house music head and came down to play exactly that. The first part of his set was a live set up he does on ableton live, more on an electro nuwave tip and totally innovative, great music. I’ll post a recording in a separate post for you to listen to.

If you’re a facebook user you can also check out Brice Smo’s pics of the night here

See you tomorrow hopefully !
